Credit Reports and Practical Solutions

Some experts say that up to 80% of all credit reports contain bogus entries that don’t belong on them. The first thing you need to do is identify which items on your credit report do not belong to you. If there are any accounts that are listed under your name that really belong to someone else, you need to dispute the bogus entry right away.

Now, it can take up to 45 days to hear back on a dispute. While you may be in a hurry to fix any discrepancies that are on your report, patience will be a virtue as the credit agencies stumble to fulfill your request. Remember, you didn’t build (or crush) your credit rating overnight, you won’t be able to fix it over night either.

Don’t expect that the disputed charge will be erased immediately or entirely. The credit bureau will contact the creditor and ask for more information regarding the reported information. After 30 days you’ll get a response from the credit bureau as to whether or not the disputed charge will be removed. If it is found that the reporting is not yours, it will be removed from your report. However, some people are surprised to find that an entry they thought was not valid is actually an account that they forgot about. If that is the case, it will remain on the report.

How bad your debt and credit history is will determine how aggressive you need to be to build a positive credit history. For instance, if you have reviewed your credit report and find only a few blemishes because you’ve made a few late payments, paying all of your bills on time will help you build your credit back immediately. If you have declared bankruptcy because your past spending habits were a tad out of control, then you have a little more work ahead of you to build back your credit.

To show that you are indeed credit worthy, start by asking a local bank or credit union how you can obtain a secure credit card. Even if your credit is really bad, you should be able to open up a secure line of credit because you are paying in advance for your credit by making a deposit up to the amount of your limit.

With this type of credit there is absolutely no risk to the bank, as you can only charge up to the amount you have prepaid on the card. It will also help you change your spending habits while you slowly rebuild your credit.

See if you can get a cosigner for a small loan or credit account. If your credit isn’t the best but the cosigner has good credit, a lender will be more likely to extend the loan knowing that there is someone to hold accountable should you default on your loan. Keep in mind, if you do not make the payments on time, the bank will then go to your cosigner to get the remaining money owed. Consider this before asking someone to cosign a loan for you.

When your credit is extremely bad, start small. Instead of trying to get that high credit limit on a Visa or MasterCard account, try applying for a furniture or department store credit card. Your credit limit will be low and the interest high, as the lender will be unsure about how you will be able to pay back the credit. This is also a time where a co-signor will come in handy.
